It would detect ad block users and put a nice little message asking them to consider unblocking us - nothing big or obtrusive or anything. But it hasn't really been thought about much besides a small, untested prototype I wrote a while ago.
Ad blockers should not be banned or discouraged in any way. Users should be allowed to block the ads on their personal devices - ShoutWiki doesn't loose any revenue from this.
Oh, really? I was under the impression we get CPM as well as CPC bids on our ad units. But then again, what do I know? I'm only the person with the access to the data.
Unless I'm mistaken, ShoutWiki gains revenue from hosting the ads. Individual users blocking them on their personal devices (there are dozens of free content blockers out there) shouldn't affect anything
As I've just stated, we get CPC and CPM bids. The majority of our revenue is CPC, which obviously, requires the user being able to see an ad, and then deciding they want to check it out further by clicking. Invalid clicks aren't paid and reduce the value of our ad slots. Ad networks are quite clever in their tracking and will pick up if someone is blocking ads or generating invalid clicks.
At the end of the day, this is a free service. If we don't take enough in ad revenue, there won't be a service at ShoutWiki.com.
The extension (will) issue a message explaining that in slightly simpler terms, asking the user to disable an ad blocker, not forcing them to view ads.
